20 05 2008

So I have a few emails back about getting down to uptown Charlotte for some interviews next week at some radio stations.  Wish me luck.  I hope to get in doing promotions gigs, but then multi-tasking like a muthafucka to show that I can do more than just be a pretty face.

I’ve lost about two pounds so far on my trek to Charleston so that’s feeling good.  Today I fell of the wagon a good bit because I started a pretty epic visit from Aunt Flo and I had to take some chocolate hostage.  But tomorrow Ill be back in the swing of things.

Additionally, the new blog I’ve started, “The Needle” is really taking off and getting more traffic than I expected.  All the irreverent music news, reviews, trivia, etc that you can use.  Check it out.  It’s very fun so far.  Looking forward to doing a few “classic” reviews of albums everyone should have in their collection, as well as doing some reviews on the latest releases as well.  All genres, all generations - no class.

And last but certainly not least, I dreamt last night that the SM proposed to me…with a strawberry.  Any dreamophiles out there want to decipher that one?

OK, I need to get back to being a lazy piece of shit on the couch, eating my weight in ice cream, and getting pumped for the first night of the American Idol Finale.  Who will it be?  David?  Or David?  We shall wait with baited breath!

don’t worry. i didn’t forget about you baby.

Everyone laughed at me when in season six of American Idol, I was a total Phil Stacey-phile.  I couldn’t help it; he left his audition to go be with his wife for the birth of his second daughter.  He tore up Tobacco Road.  He had those big, pretty baby blue eyes.  I was a sucker, what can I say?  But alas, my dear bald stud of a baby bird finally made it to the big time and his self-titled, debut album on Lyric Street Records will be in stores on Tuesday of next week.

Check out his music below - and fall in love with Phil Stacey all over again (or give him another shot, eh?)

ryan seacrest is an asshole.

11 04 2008

Last night’s American Idol was certainly a shock for most of us.  Last year, the aftermath of Idol Gives Back left every contenstant in tact and alive for the next week.  However this year, the fate was not the same.  Hottie Aussie Michael Johns was eliminated from the show and somehow, despite my voodoo dolls and witchcraft spells (The hair from a newt’s belly!  One freckle from a toad!), Kristy Lee Cook and Syesha Mercado are still alive and kicking.  Not only was Michael kicked off, Ryan Seacrest was a rude asshole to him; giving him hope but then pushing him down again.

Honestly, there have been many instances where not winning American Idol has really worked out better for some of the artists involved.  Chris Daughtry, of course, is the shining example of that.  I just hope the same fate can meet Mr. Johns.

I dont think there is anyone out there who can say he wasn’t talented, but he did have some identity issues as well as song choice issues.  To me, it’s hard to watch week after week with someone trying to figure out who they are.  I am just afraid that Carly Smithson very well might meet the same fate for the same reasons.  For me, there are a few folks on the show - Carly, Michael, and Syesha are perfect examples - that seem to get to about a 92% every week.  They have great voices, almost pick the right songs…but just barely fall flat for some reason.

Its just to the point now that really good people are going to start exiting the show.  It’s going to get to be a real cat-fight of song choice and pure arrangement that keeps people on.  Should be interesting!

thanks.

You know you have a blog that touches the hearts and souls of the whole spectrum of readers out there when your top two search terms of the day are “David Archuleta” and….”ass rape.”

How these people find me never fails to amaze.  Sometimes I do like to put funny words in my tags, just to see if people search for them.  I have proved my point (Was I trying to make one?).  Just as many people search for American Idol contestant names as they do for deviant bedroom behavior.  Congratulations America.  You make me sick.

In a good way, though.  For real.  Totally boss search techniques.

idol recap: top 9.

2 04 2008

Don’t get me wrong.  I am a huge fan of Dolly Parton.  There are few people in the music industry to stay relevant as long as she has and she has contributed more to music than a lot of people recognize.  Unfortunately, I don’t feel like her music translated well to American Idol last night.

The favorites were good and the mediocre were mediocre.  My man, David Cook did well considering he had to transform Dolly into rock…and honestly, the performances of the night for me were David Archuleta (admittedly, I was disappointed when he did so well) and Michael Johns.

Its hard to say who will go at this point.  Of course, I am hoping for Ramiele to get the screws put to her, but America keeps surprising me.  Kristy Lee Cook could have taken better advantage of a country genre week, in my option.  Brooke White rushed Jolene too much.  Syesha and Jason Castro were pretty boring.  Carly actually did well and sounded pretty, but Simon was right - who dressed her this week?  Did she come straight from tending bar?

All in all, I was pretty disappointed this week.  I know it was a tough theme but still, I was hoping for some killer performances that we get 2-3 of each week.  I guess David Cook can’t be sheer perfection every week.  Again, I hope it’s Ramiele.  She is the least talented of the group.  Her and Kristy Lee.  America…I hope you did the right thing.  It’d be a real shame if I had to kick everyone’s ass in America, one at a time.  I am a busy, important lady and that would take a long ass time.

NOTE: David Cook was rushed to the hospital last night with heart palpitations.  Word is that my soulmate…I mean uh, Cook, is fine now.  I think he shouldn’t be looking at pictures of me.  That tends to do it to the guys.

stream of consciousness…

Campbell’s Soup at Hand Chicken with Mini Noodle, when cold, feels like already puked-up puke in your mouth.

I can be a bad person if I let myself.

I am a good person most of the time though.

Life is rarely fair.

Twitter is kinda cool.

American Idol is on tonight!

David Cook is the man!

Are the guys gonna play ball tonight?

My throat hurts.   Am I getting sick again?

I need to find the SM’s old blackberry.

Diet Dr. Pepper tastes a lot like regular Dr. Pepper.  Seriously.

I have great friends.

I have a great family.  Make that a TOTALLY BOSS family.

It’s almost time to go!  Couch or bleachers tonight?  We shall see!

american idol recap: top ten. aka: why i need to be with david cook.

26 03 2008

“Oops…sorry about your face.”

Photo of David Cook, stepping on everyone else to the top.

Anyone in their right mind who watched American Idol last night and has any clue about anything knows that David Cook is the one to beat.  The dark horse label can be snatched off and the American Idol label should be slapped on.  If this is a talent competition, David Cook wins for last night’s awesome performance of “Billy Jean”.  If it’s just popularity, he may not take the cake, but that is fine with me.  He can be the next Chris Daughtry, times ten.  That’s fine with me.  And fine with the SM.  The SM said last night that HE’D want to have David Cook’s babies if he could, and got chills while he was singing.  My (awesomely raunchy) coworker said she actually wet herself. My other (way more considerative) coworker actually dropped the F-bomb, calling it “fucking brilliant.”

Last night, while very mediocre by most of the other contestants, for me was a contest between David Cook and Michael Johns.  Finally, it seemed like Johns was going to be one to beat - the one who finally took the game seriously and blew the roof off the place.  But alas, the last minutes of the show ticked down and Cook came out and wowed us into submission and worship again.

I told the SM, “It’s like Michael Johns came out and said, ‘Look at this hot chick I just banged’, and David Cook stepped up and said, ‘So what, I fucked her last night.  She wasn’t that good.’”  I thought Michael Johns was finally brilliant and picked the perfect song to showcase his talents.  But somehow, David Cook just refused to let go of his strangle hold on the show, and his foot pon the necks of his competitors.

Carly and Brooke were fine again this week, seeming like they are scared to go that extra step from a 97% to a 100%.  You know they have the voices, but they seem scared.  Chikezie, Archuleta, Jason and Kristy Lee - I am just tired of their vibes.  Besides, God Bless the USA was ruined for me about 15 years ago when we did it as a curtain call to a dance recital I was in around 1991 or 1992 (during Desert Storm).  Something about sequins, stage makeup and little American flags waving in the chubby hands of tiny Jon Benet impersonators has just tainted it forever.

But the worst of the night for me, with a bullet, was Ramiele Malubay.  I don’t care how sick she is, if she stays to fight another week, I am going to lose my shit.  She has no identity as an artist and to do Heart’s “Alone” was maybe one of the worst song choices of the season.

What was your take on the show?  Who do you think will be eliminated tonight?

american idol: then there were eleven.

13 03 2008

We all had a pretty good idea last night of the bottom three last night.  Though I thought Syesha shouldn’t have been there and should have been replaced with Ramiele, Kristy and David H. were definitely the lowlights of the show.  I can’t help but think the rumors (are they still rumors if they are true?) about his previous life did not help his situation.  But alas, the top 12 are down to 11 now.  And did I hear right that they are going to do Beatles again next week?  Well, I guess I was pleasantly surprised this week…maybe it’ll be worthwhile again.

Do you think America picked it right this week?

review: american idol recap - top 12

12 03 2008

Last night, our American Idol top 12 took the stage with the Lennon and McCartney songbook and actually surprised me some.  If you know me, I am a Beatles freak and have a problem sometimes when people other than John, Paul, George and Ringo cover (read: ass-rape) the songs of the most influential, brilliant band of all time.  I thinkt he best way to do this is to just go through the 12 - jot down a comment or two and what I think they should have sang.  Then I’ll move on.  Then, I’d love to hear your comments on the show.

Syesha Mercado:  OK, of course this chick has a great voice and is a total front-runner on the female side, but srsly.  She could have picked anything except “Got To Get You Into My Life.”  The problem with picking just one artist as a theme is if there are people who were never really into that artist, they choose to cover a version of the song that already was covered.

Earth Wind and Fire supposedly did this song in a jazzed-up, funk kind of way…I just don’t think there is any way that anyone, talented or not, can do justice to a cover of a cover.  To me, I liken it to a tragic game of Telephone.  The original does it the way it was intended, then it’s passed through another creative opinion filter…then another?  What I would hve preferred:  Blackbird.  Happiness is a Warm Gun might have been hot too.  I’m pissed no one did it.

Chickezie:  His version of ‘She’s a Woman”, no matter how you cut it, or if you like bluegrass or not, was hotter than a two dollar pistol.  Really I am happy without it went.  He was entertaining, and he had a blast.  If he didn’t do that song, I guess I’d pick And I Love Her…..pretty and slow.  But this was hot.

Ramiele Malubay:  Honestly, I have never heard anyone cover “In My Life” and do it any justice.  For whatever reason, this song just doensn’t translate for anyone.  It was kind of pretty, kind of vulnverable and sweet…but just didn’t strike the chord I think she was expecting to with the audience.  For some reason, she just doesn’t pull the audience in.  Its like that “fourth wall” they talk about in theatre is really there, made of bricks.  Like she is performing in a room alone with no one to engage.  I might have given her Sexy Sadie.  I think even The Long and Winding Road would have done her voice more justice.

Jason Castro:  One of my favorite Beatles songs, of all time, hands-down, is If I Fell.  Seeing it in Across the universe done by Evan Rachel Wood almost ruined it for me because hers was the only cover I ever heard that ever did it justice.  While Jason is safe and he did a fine job, I wish he could have done something a little more with it.  It seemed like he rushed through the lyrics when he could have done more with it if he had slowed it down.  It didn’t help to juxtapose last week’s “Hallelujah” with this week’s performance either, because I felt that was probably his best to date.  If he should have done anything else, he has the engaging qualities that would have fit Yesterday to a tee and made it believable.

Carly Smithson:  Carly could sing just about anything and I’d be on my knees at her beck and call.  She did something she was comfortable with (which can sometimes backfire for being too safe) and tore the roof off the place.  If she did anything else, I’d have to give her Oh! Darling.  But she worked her magic on Come Together just fine.

David Hernandez:  This dude just made me sad this week.  To have the rumors coming out about you that he has and to do I Saw Her Standing there - a song that is so, innocent, poppy and…straight…just didn’t jive with me and his new tainted reputation.  I lost him.  I dug his voice for a while…it has almost a Gary LeVox (Rascal Flatts) quality and ease to it.  But after this week, I just didn’t get it.  The SM and I joked that instead of that song he should have sung just about anything else….or the old standard and one of my favorites, “Butt Sex With Dudes.”  Ok, that’s not a real song.  So what.  You’re feelin’ me.

Brooke White:  Now HERE is a song that fit voice and talent-wise.  My favorite Beatles song is Let It Be and when I heard Brooke would be doing it, I wasn’t totally sold.  By the end, however, I was almost in tears myself.  Vulnerable, sweet, genuine…authentic…barefoot.  That’s how I’d want to do it if I was in the Top 12.  If she didn’t do that, we thought she might have tackled Yesterday, acoustic style - Like I saw (finally was SO blessed to have seen - and cried through) Paul McCartney do it in concert in 2001…like he did on Ed Sullivan back in the day.  Just one man and the guitar under one big spotlight.

David Cook:  OMG, I totally forgot about Eleanor Rigby.  We were thinking he might have done something like Strawberry Fields and I would have been good with him doing anything like Youve Got To Hide Your Love Away, or Girl.  But Jesus H.  David Cook, given the unfortunately demise of David Archuleta (yet to be critiqued) has definitely moved into the top spot in my book.  I think people like Michael Johns and Carly and Archuleta have the talent and presence in certain situations to win the whole thing….but just by pure performance and the fact that we haven’t had to wait for him to pull out the big guns, David Cook WAS the dark horse, and now IS the thoroughbred of the competition.  Brilliant.  The only thing he MIGHT have done even better on was While My Guitar Gently Weeps.

Amanda Overmyer:  I never thought of “You Can’t Do That” this way but it actually worked really well.  Her voice is so powerful, yet so effortless.  I really thought she’d do Oh Darling or Get Back…ven Helter Skelter (though I didn’t want to her to do the latter).  But this worked just fine for me.

Michael Johns:  Across the Uniuverse definitely fit him personality wise, but I guess I am still waiting for him to really kick it up a notch, make something his own and blow us out of the water.  I know he has it.  I keep feeling like each week, he gets to like a 92%; he’s on the brink of something really brilliant but he just can’t quite get there.  Again, I think something like You’ve Got to Hide Your Love Away or Girl would have been good for him.  Even Happiness is a Warm Gun would have fit perfectly here too.

Kristy Lee Cook:  You gotta give this girl credit for taking her country roots literally.  Eight Days a Week had an…interesting arrangement.  But even if she sang it the best she could, it was still too backwoods and she was still too uncomfortable.  I don’t know what she could have done really.  I think it’s probably the end of the road for her this week.

Shhhhhhhhhhhh-it.

David Archuleta:  Ohhh…..David, David, David.  Falling victim to the cover-of-a-cover disease.  I would have been delighted if he would have done Here, There and Everywhere…even And I Love Her - Even Something…something soft and pretty and simply innocent.  But We Can Work It Out is really no one’s favorite Beatles song…forget Stevie Wonder’s version.  Besides…if you don’t know the words to a song…why not just do whatever one best fits your voice instead of doing some cover and butchering that?

I hate it because while he wasn’t my personal favorite, I have kind of put my neck out on the line, saying he’s my favorite to win the whole thing.  I’m thinking he’ll fit perfect into that whole tween, Miley Cyrus, Jonas Brothers niche that is so popular right now.  He didn’t do bad enough to be kicked off tonight but he has definitely shown some chinks in his armor that won’t be so easy to buff out in the coming weeks.  It’s only going to get more stressful and difficult to really come with it each week - from here on out.  Maybe he’s just a little too green to go all the way?

As for tonight’s result show, I can’t help but think that either David Hernandez or Kristy Lee Cook are going home.  David with his performance and the escalating rumors (with photographic evidence) are just not helping.  And Kristy Lee Cook, while she is the sole country-tinged finalist, just doesn’t stack up.  David Archuleta was the worst of the night, but there is no way he is going home.  Let’s tune in and see!
